My Students

Students with disabilities need not be excluded from the science curriculum!

My students attend an inner city high school in the Bronx, NY.

They come from lower income families, and many are immigrants from Latin America and Africa. They are learning English while trying to obtain a diploma and often have interrupted education. The disabilities in my classroom include cognitive deficits, hearing impairment, and learning disabilities. Despite their challenges they demonstrate a healthy curiosity about the world and how it works. Hands-on scientific experiences fully engage their interest.

My Project

The high school has few resources and limited access to current textbooks. My request is for binders so I can work with students to organize material and create a record of their progress in the science classroom. Organized by unit, each section of the binder will contain vocabulary words, graphs and pictures, projects, outlines, homework, and teacher prepared summaries of chapters and guided note taking assignments. Through hands-on experiences and meticulous monitoring, students will have access to the grade level science curriculum, and many will pass the state mandated tests.

Please acknowledge my students' potential and support their right to fully engage in scientific inquiry.

Minor adjustments to the curriculum, a focus on language-learning, experiential opportunities, and expectations that they master the material will yield great outcomes. The binders will facilitate students' organizational skills, while creating a personal record of their achievements.
