Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Kindergarten is a special grade because a small number of students have prior schooling experience at the beginning of the year so it is important for them to feel comfortable in school while learning. Comfort is sensed through the way students handle daily activities and through their development in independence. To make students feel like they can be independent, I work hard in creating spaces and use organization tools that help students understand where they can find certain sheets, materials, learning tools, etc. in the classroom, especially when they work in small groups while I focus on one particular group of students per activity.

Organization also helps me, as an educator, gather my paperwork, tools, and materials necessary for instruction.

When I am organized, teaching flows seamlessly. With each year that passes, the workload may change but I find better ways to improve storage of activities for upcoming learning units. Some of the tools in this project, like the pencil boxes, sleeve pockets, and label maker refills are meant for my students to use and then reuse in their learning throughout the year. Students get used to using certain learning tools and therefore feel like they can work independently if they wish too. They also feel familiar and comfortable, making anxiety levels decrease and feel safe in their classroom.

Having an organized classroom helps students feel in control, feel strong, feel cared for, all while fostering autonomy. When students are able to move around their classroom freely, keep it organized, and see their role model (me) be organized as well then they see what matters and how our learning space is important and taken care of.
