My students require a much more individualized and specialized way of learning. They learn through hands-on materials and visuals. They need access to materials that keep all of their materials organized. When provided with this type of learning environment, my students can learn and excel!
"It is never too late to expand the mind of a person on the autism spectrum" -Dr. Temple
Autism is an extremely challenging disability that affects every aspect of my students' lives. My classroom is made up of eight young people with autism. We are located in a low-income school where I need to buy most, if not all, of my own supplies.
My Project
Currently, in our classroom, we have some interesting and fun activity bins and books. Each of these items are accessible to all the students to use when they are given independent work time. Every bin is numbered for them to follow their schedule to find that activity bin and they can also grab a book to read. Some of these items focus on math, reading, rhyming, sorting and counting. The books are all tailored to their reading ability as well.
Unfortunately, my book shelves are well over 10 years old and falling apart.
We have two bookshelves that are missing shelves, or nails or staples coming out of the wood. The wood is very thin, therefore causing our shelves to break in half or just collapse. Our classroom bookshelves are becoming a hazard for our classroom. Please consider helping my students and I by donating for these two storage and book shelving units.
