This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Cherish the children marching to the beat of their own music. They play the most beautiful heart songs. " ~ Fiona Goldworthy
All children have the right to learn and I want to ensure that all my students can work to their greatest potential. Now I need to give them the tools to get there.
Working as a teacher in District 75 of New York City Department of Education, I have the honor of working with eight wonderful students.
My particular class is an 8:1:1 classroom which means that I have 8 students, myself and a paraprofessional. My students are all 5 and 6 years old from different communities in Queens, New York and on the autism spectrum. Within my class, students have significant cognitive delays, are severely emotionally challenged, sensory impaired and multiply disabled.
My Project
Working with children with autism, it is important to enhance student learning, communication and independence. The way that can be achieved within the classroom is through structured teaching. With the supplies requested, structured teaching could take place throughout the day.
Color coordinated schedules and day routine cues can be made for each individual student using laminate paper and Velcro. With these schedules the students can understand the daily routines within the class. Also, students will have an opportunity to work independently using activities stored in their same color bin. Assigning each student a color and providing supplies that organize the classroom in such a way helps the students better understand their individual role. Organizing their environments and developing clear appropriate expectations will help the students facilitate their move from school to post-school activities.
Improving and organizing the whole set up of the classroom, will give my students a chance to be independent.
It will be extremely beneficial to have the tools to create visual supports to make the sequence of daily activities predictable and understandable. The classroom will have posted schedules that will lay out certain tasks. Even with the difficulties with attention, with the concepts of time using visual supports will make individual tasks understandable.
