This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have Autism. Our school is in an inner-city, low income neighborhood in North Miami, Florida. Our school has 99% of the students on free or reduced lunch. I have a classroom of 4th and 5th graders.
Teaching students with autism is challenging, but very rewarding.
They require modifications, accommodations and a lot of teacher assistance to reach their academic goals. What I love most about my students is that they love to come to school to learn. They are each uniquely different and special in many ways.
My Project
Our classroom is in dear need of a storage space for my students to hang their backpacks. This bookcase will be used not only to store their backpacks when they come in but to create a mailbox for students to retrieve homework and notices to be sent home.
It is very important for my students to learn organizational skills and independence and this will help them by giving them the responsibility of checking their mailbox.
It will also help them gain independence of putting away and getting their backpacks, checking their mailbox for homework and important papers and teaching them organizational skills.
