Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a second year teacher, and I have learned to love middle school. I am so excited to continue teach my students about where their food comes and how to be stewards of the planet. I recently started an environmental club where we are focusing on recycling and trying to become Zero waste. My school is part of a pilot program by our district to do it as well. My students are always complaining about the school lunch and I am hoping to teach them to love healthy food, how to grow what they can at home even if they live in an apartment, and how we might be able to one day have a school garden that could produce food the students could eat. Thank you for your support in education!
My Project
These materials will enable the students to have a hands on experience of farming. The goal of this project is to teach students about healthy eating, sustainable growing methods, and how to replicate it at home and at school in a realistic way. This spring we will be discussing variation, adaptation, biomes, and Photosynthesis. When we are studying Photosynthesis we are going to grow a couple of different types of plants and see how the amount of sunlight we given them alter the rate of growth. Through this project we are able to alter and regulate the growing conditions which will allow the students the ability to design a lab and test their hypothesis. Through the pandemic there have not been as many hands on activities and this project will enable my students to have a hands on activity every day as they observe the plants growing. Many of my students complain about how unhealthy the school lunches are and their are ways we can help make the change. One way is to have a school garden and teach students how to eat healthy and seasonally. This product can be a starting point for the students as well as the school for the importance of healthy eating and sustainably growing food. Thank you for your support!
