Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school population as per the NYC Department of Education statistics is comprised as follows: 27% Black, 67% Hispanic/Latino, 1% Asian, & 2% White. 28% are students with disabilities (vs. 17% city-wide) , 3% self-contained (vs. 2% city-wide), 13% English Language Learners (vs.11% city-wide), and 88% Economic Need Index (vs. 71% city-wide). Those are the official, rigorous statistics. Through my eyes they are engaged, willing to learn, respectful, future citizens. The obstacles they face in and out of the classroom are always a challenge.

My Project

I am currently teaching Regents Chemistry with very limited supplies, particularly glassware. Basic glassware is lacking and specialty glassware is non existent. It's no secret that some NYC Public schools are grossly underfunded. Last years budget fell short and both the NYC Mayor & Governor are already crying about the deficit in NYC due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so it is quite safe to assume next year will be even tighter. With the upcoming students for Regents Chemistry and the desire for my principal to offer AP Chemistry , the need for supplies will be dire.
