Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I feel happy and lucky to work with my students. I have taught at my school for the last two years, and my relationship with the students has grown tremendously during that time. I love getting to know my students individually through each opportunity, and I think of them often. It motivates me when I see my students experience and enjoy music. Sharing something that I love with these kids makes me feel happy!

I teach every class in our school from pre-kindergarteners to 5th graders, nearly a total of 500 students, at a Title I elementary school in Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York City.

Many of my students come from a Hispanic background and are learning English. As a music teacher, I feel I have special advantages to connect with a wide range of my students, including those who are English learners. For most of them, our music class is the only opportunity for their music lessons. Therefore, I want to make our time together as meaningful as possible.

My Project

I will never stop learning in order to be the best music teacher I can be for my students. During the upcoming school year of 2019-2020, I would like to focus my learning on Orff Schulwerk, a.k.a., the Orff approach, by getting certified in Orff level one. This is a music teaching method by the German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982). For those who are curious, just Google his most famous work, "Carmina Burana". I am sure many will immediately recognize the tune!

The Orff approach is a widely popular and respected teaching method in elementary schools, and it focuses on how children play using the combination of music, drama, movement, and speech.

Usually these certification trainings are available in an intensive form for a few weeks during summer. However, the New York City Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association (NYCCAOSA) offers the level one and level two certification throughout a school year (October 8, 2019- March 17, 2020 for the upcoming year, to be more specific). I would love to be part of that learning experience and to bring more fun and meaningful lessons to my students!

There are a few reasons why I am confident this training will tremendously benefit my students. First, I am familiar with the basic ideas of Orff Schulwerk. I also went to a workshop by NYCCAOSA before, and it was one of my favorite workshops. Lastly, in my classroom, I have a few instruments that Orff Schulwerk uses, and my students already love using them despite my lack of proper training. Please consider helping me and my students by providing me with this Orff Schulwerk training! I want to be the best teacher I can be for my students. Thank you for reading our story!
