My Students

While our class sizes continue to increase, our per child budget continues to decrease. I want to make sure that this lack of funding does not cause my students' interest in learning to decrease as well!

I teach a group of enthusiastic and energetic 1st grade students who love to express themselves in words and actions.

Our first grade class is part of a small, public Title 1 elementary school with a large population of second language learners. Although these youngsters come from the same local neighborhood, their socioeconomic and multicultural backgrounds are very varied. No matter their beginnings, our end goal is to prepare them all to have the characteristics and skills needed to learn, work, and live successfully.

My Project

My students are hard workers and they love to see the results of their efforts. The set of digital timers will give the students the opportunity to watch their fluency increase as they work in teams on repeated readings of decodable texts. They are currently using old sand timers but those timers do not allow the student doing the timing to also help the reader with decoding words because they have to keep their eye on the sand. With these digital timers, the students can wait for the buzzer to go off and therefore put their total focus on helping their partner. They will also allow students to practice their fluency independently since they will hear the buzzer when it is time to stop!

This year I am trying to give my students an environment just as interesting and colorful as them!

The multicolored reams of paper, post it notes, highlighters, and white board markers will make learning and displaying their work as fun and colorful as a rainbow. The highlighters will be used to mark words with target spelling patterns in their decodable texts and the post it notes will help them learn how to annotate.

1st grade students learn so much about writing, such as penmanship, spelling, sentence structure, using describing words, capitals, and punctuation, as well as the specifics of the genres. These pads of sticky poster paper will allow the students to create group writing pieces as I teach them and they learn from each other the conventions and strategies of great writing. We will not be limited in posting the model pieces to the number of easels we have room for. We can put them up all over since they have a sticky strip and will stay safely on any surface in the room!
