Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In every child is a unique and beautiful little mind waiting to jump out of the box and make their mark on the world. Being a music teacher, I get to experience the joy of helping those students learn creative ways in which they can do just that. I teach music to Pre-K through 5th grade students at a high-needs elementary school. I love my school, my students, and the other passionate teachers that I get to work with everyday. Although the administration is very supportive of the music program at our school, we do not have very much money to put towards teaching materials.

Students today struggle with many pressures that have become increasingly overwhelming in their young lives. During class, I watch my elementary students desperately try to fit in and be just like everyone else. They hide their individuality and are scared to share their hopes, dreams, and feelings with one another. I can even see it in our Kindergarten babies. It breaks my heart to think that such creative minds are shutting off instead of opening up. I have been trying to help my students open up and talk about feelings in response to music. They have been very receptive so far. Some have even written poems and lyrics about their lives. I would like to encourage more of this creative expression through our music curriculum.

The students are interested in listening to more music and ask questions about the composers and their lives. I would love to have more examples of classical and modern music and pictures of these composers to share with them. How wonderful would it be for me to be able to share the meaning behind the music with my students! They also ask about what they are hearing in the recordings. Many of my students have never seen orchestral instruments before. Having pictures of these instruments as well as additional teaching materials and recordings would open up new opportunities to them. Additionally, I am beginning to teach my students to read music. I can see the inspiration in their energy and participation during class as they sing and play recorder. I would like to help them compose their very own songs as a medium of expressing their emotions.

With your help, I would be able to teach our students to freely express their feelings and thoughts through music. They could have a lasting product to take with them and be proud of-something of their very own that shows the world a little piece of who they are. The best part is that after the students compose their song, I will record the class playing or singing it. Then I will present each student with a copy of their very own. I already have all of the materials for this part of the project. I can only hope that they would remember the lesson of being proud to be who they are long after they have gone on to the next school with an opportunity such as this one. Please help us to inspire a few more dreams, a few more hopes, and a few more moments of happiness in the lives of these children.
