My Students

I have the opportunity to facilitate learning for 150 students. It is my goal to assist my students in transforming from dependent learners to independent learners. My students are from an inner city, Title I school. They attend a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch and approximately 40% of the students are homeless. The majority of my students are freshmen and 30% of my students are English Language Learners. They have a tremendous task to pass 3 major tests during their last quarter of school their first year.

My Project

I teach math. I use various online resources that allow me to facilitate my instruction. Two online resources I use are Desmos and Nearpod. Nearpod allows me teach each student and to check for understanding and pace the learning for my students. Desmos allows students to investigate and graph mathematical concepts and learn at their own pace as I monitor their work. A large percentage of my students are English Language Learners. Math is a language all to itself however coupled with the difficulties of communication in another language makes my task very difficult.

The pocket translator will help to minimize misunderstandings that my non-English students have with their limited English Skills.

I use various students to assist me with translation but when I am working in small groups and allowing other students to move on at their own pace, I need to be able to effectively communicate with my students and understand their questions. I want my students to feel free to ask me questions and using the laptops for them to communicate to me and the small group instructions will enable me to meet my students needs.
