My Students

Students in Southeast DC are typically described by their deficits, the gaps in opportunity and achievement. Families, students and teachers start to internalize these labels, but not in my classroom. My Kindergarten students have and give so much! Everyday is a celebration! Logging into our virtual classroom each day to see their smiles reminds of the commitment they have to learning; it's a gift. Pushing themselves to work through academic challenges, learning to read, write and solve math problems by attending to instruction and directions on a screen, it's truly a gift. Building and uplifting one another through cheers, shoutouts, dance parties and lunch conversations on Zoom, the most pure and sacred gift. They are so rich--wealthy in fact in culture, perseverance, ingenuity, grit, love, community, hope, spirit. They are young Black Kings and Queens truly deserving of the highest quality education one could provide. They inspire me each and everyday to be both a better teacher and a better person. While virtual learning isn't the most ideal space for teaching Kindergarten, it is also a gift. My students remind me daily, "We're like family because we're at each others house!"

My Project

This Desktop will replace the 11-inch Macbook being used to teach a virtual Kindergarten classroom. Right now, I am experiencing frequent crashes and freezing, slower uploads and downloads, and minimal space to save student work.

The larger screen will allow for me to see each of my students more clearly in order to provide more specific support and feedback for their hard work.

It will allow for more storage space, as many of the documents, pictures, etc. since the closing of schools has contributed to this old laptops demise.

My students and their families have been patient and have extended grace with the tech issues, well beyond the quality of education that they deserve, virtual or otherwise.
