My Project

My English language learners with significant cognitive disabilities engage in functional-vocational experiences at their community-based, full-time worksite. They increase their exposure to post-secondary opportunities, increase their independence and autonomy, and increase their English language skills all while volunteering at a local community hospital and medical campus. Additionally, their learning allows them to develop their functional-academic & pre-vocational skills within a real-world context. Students complete jobs in departments including Food & Nutrition, Clerical Services, Laundry, Human Resources, and Volunteer Services. Students work in groups with school staff or independently, along-side hospital employees. Participating in all aspects of the medical facility, their work assists in giving hospital patients a comprehensive level of care. They're on the forefront delivering newspapers/books to patients and preparing patient lunches; they're cleaning and stocking the cafeteria, and they’re behind the scenes, stocking supply rooms for nurses, folding doctors’ scrubs, and doing mailings.

But in order to complete their vocational jobs within this vocational program, my English language learners with special needs require various visuals and hand-on manipulatives, in addition to resources that promote the organization of these tools.

When we're not out doing deliveries, mailings, and other jobs across the hospital, we're doing lessons in a conference room within one of the hospital's offices. This space is communally shared with several other groups, including other hospital volunteers and employees. When it is not being used by others, this shared conference room serves as our “home-base” and our classroom. Therefore, we also need ways to organize our resources/supplies that are supportive of students’ needs, but that are simultaneously professional, mobile and easily accessible when we need it, and yet tidy and succinct enough to be out of the way when others are using the space.
