This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many cases of students lacking success in their classrooms have to do with students’ level of preparedness. Having something as simple as writing utensils and paper are things that can determine the progress and achievement of the student. School supplies impact the success of the student in ways that most people fail to recognize.

According to Lending Tree, parents of school-age children across the country expect back-to-school shopping will cost them an average of $498, and 29% say they're unable to afford their child's school supplies this year.

One of the most devastating effects of COVID-19 has been the sheer number of families unemployed and who are still struggling to provide for the needs of their children. Our students with autism are showing up to school every day ready to learn. However, most of our families lack the financial resources needed to purchase school supplies for their children to practice the skills learned each day.

For this upcoming school year our school will be focusing heavily on a are hands on mathematics program. Most of our students are significantly below grade level in math and struggle with the visualization and comprehension of concepts like more/less than, multiplying, and dividing of numbers. With the requested supplies our students will be able to draw out math problems using their choice of writing utensil on paper or dry-erase boards. Students will be able to measure shapes using tools like a ruler and learn to solve math problems with a calculator.

With all requested supplies we hope to ready up our students with autism for another action packed school year with tools to support them as they master new skills. Please invest in the future of the south Bronx, our incredible students.
