My Students

Some of my students come to kindergarten and it is their first experience reading. Their experience needs to be memorable and exciting in order to continue their desire to learn. A listening center is a great way to make reading more fun!

I have a small classroom full of 20 wonderful kindergarten students.

My students are at all different levels of learning. Central Elementary is home to 406 young five through fifth grade students. Our educational programming uses research based practices and curriculum to assist all learners, focused instruction in language arts and mathematics, and common planning time for teachers at all grade levels to design, deliver, and assess a comprehensive, yet differentiated learning environment for all students. Each week our children have the opportunity to participate in physical education, music, computer instruction, library, art, and for our fifth grade students Spanish. Our well-rounded curriculum allows for students to accelerate in areas of interest and our teaching faculty encourages and facilitates exploration and mastery learning for all.

My Project

Hearing books read on tape helps children see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps children focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. A listening center can give children a break from reading in order to focus on other important skills such as following along with the narrator and listening. This will enrich my students multi-sensory experience with books!

Reading has to be fun!

I believe narrators on tape embellish their storytelling with silly voices and dramatic enhancements to make reading fun. They emphasize reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill, and make children eager to learn how to read. Beyond their sheer enjoyment of audio books, children also develop a sense of narrative structure and understanding of language. Stories on tape help them to grasp the rich and various ways in which language distills and conveys meaning.
