Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Sometimes the solution to improving student success can be just creating a little light at the end of their tunnels. One of the most devastating effects of COVID-19 has been the sheer number of students who are just disengaged in their learning. In math and reading, students are behind where they would be after a normal year, with the most vulnerable students with a disability such as ours showing the steepest drops, according to two new reports from the consulting firm McKinsey & Company and the NWEA.

As a result, an education system plagued by racial and socioeconomic inequities has only gotten worse during the coronavirus pandemic.

An educational gap became a gulf.

One way we hope to support our students with autism is through the use of our School P.R.I.D.E store. Our school employs a PBIS program called “PRIDE” (practice safety, respect, in location, Do the responsible thing, and engage in learning). Students are earning points throughout the day as they follow PRIDE. As students earn points, they will reach different tiers of awards and prizes (i.e sensory toys, slime, art supplies, and snacks). However, at the moment we are running low in the snack area. Our hope is to restore our P.R.I.D.E store back to its glory and with it our students' desire to continue to work hard to earn points to shop. With the P.R.I.D.E. store as a strong source of motivation for our students, we know can improve those statistics in ELA and Math even just a little within our school community here in the South Bronx.

Our students with autism have been severely pushed back in their academics due to this pandemic. Please join us in support of our P.R.I.D.E store to help inspire them and get them back on track.
