My Students

Our school is 65% free and reduced lunch, most of my students are English language learners, and live in an urban community. Our intellectually disabled moderate class is comprised of 16 students with eligibilities such as Autism, Other Health impairments, and Intellectual Disabilities. My students come to school each day with the love for learning and are always happy, kind, and want to be the best versions of themselves.

The alternative curriculum which is based on the premise that every student no matter how severe his or her disability is capable of living working and recreating in the community as a successful citizen.

We focus on engaging students in constructive and personal leisure activities in school, home, and the community. We focus on increasing the likelihood of our students functioning as contributing adults within our society and increase opportunities of obtaining employment. We need to prepare our students to become as independent as possible in his or her living environment. Subject areas include community awareness, social awareness, money handling and time management, practical writing skills, and social skills.

My Project

The goal of our class is to teach students to be independent.

I have chosen these materials and classroom supplies to assist in creating a more organized classroom.

My students struggle to maintain routines and procedures, plan ahead and stay organized. By designing work spaces with the appropriate materials, students can move from one space to another independently, much like in a workplace.

The storage bins will hold subject-specific learning materials. File folder games offer a chance for students to practice and master previously learned skills and gain much needed confidence in accomplishing something on their own. Starting each day with a review of the calendar and weather teaches students to plan ahead, get ready for upcoming events and be prepared for changes.
