My Students

On the first day of school, my students will hit the ground running... with their new materials funded by this project. When too many of my kids start off the year grade levels behind their privileged peers in literacy—often reading at 4th or 5th grade levels—we have no time to waste in ELA class!

There is also no time to waste in preparing my students for their future schooling and careers.

Because they are from an at-risk, low-income neighborhood, my students often lack the tools and opportunities to succeed, including necessary school supplies and the life skills needed to ensure productivity and organization. Despite these and other challenges they face, my kids are just like any other middle schooler around the country: they show up to school each day with their (albeit messy) backpacks, their (sometimes crumbled) homework assignments, and their insatiable hunger to learn.

My Project

These materials will provide my students with a "starter kit" to success in my classroom, and more importantly, to create and maintain organizational systems throughout the school year. Aside from the majority of my students not being able to afford basic supplies each year, all of my middle schoolers need to learn how to properly store and responsibly care for their school work. The binders and journals will be utilized daily in my classroom in order to help my kids stay organized, establish effective study habits, and be even more motivated to achieve their goals. The supplementary classroom materials, including clipboards and pocket dictionaries, will all aide in my students' development as voracious readers, eloquent writers, and accomplished learners.

There are no flashy gimmicks in this project, no fancy technology or exotic supply requests.

These are simply essential materials for my kids—ones that I hope will help foster life-long organizational practices and instill a sense of pride in my students and their work.
