My Students

My statistics students love the content of the course because they never have to ask the question, "When will I ever use this?" However, the book they have been provided uses very complex notation and does not explain the concepts in a clear manner, so they really lose that resource while studying.

I teach inner city students at New York City's Beacon High School.

Our students love to learn and think outside of the box, especially in statistics where they can connect the math to most of the social happenings around them. They are extremely inquisitive and have excellent study habits; however, their current text book is not conducive to self-study. Due to major budget cuts with the introduction of universal Pre-K, items like new text books were simply not an option this year. I really want my students to learn how to properly read a text book and enjoy that process. Having this new resource will really change their learning experience throughout the year.

My Project

Through multiple project postings, I am hoping to obtain a total of forty books (ten per project). The students will be able to read the mini chapters and write outlines for each chapter. They will use the practice sections for homework sets. There are extra activities and projects included in every chapter, including projects that utilize current statistical technology. Until we have a complete set, they will share the donated copies. Eventually, I would like to replace their current book. The book was written as a resource for teenagers, making their studying experience more attainable and fun.

When learning is fun, the new concepts stay with the students.

This is a course that my students will utilize in their future careers as well as their collegiate studies. It is imperative that they not only learn the concepts but truly master them for success in our ever growing data-driven society.
