Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.
To me our students are superheroes!
Whether it's learning how to read or write or solving a mathematical equation; our students are working hard to strengthen those abilities and use them to break down any obstacle.
My Project
“Sensory” is a word that goes hand and hand with fitness for our population of students with autism. Besides the five senses of smell, taste, sight, hearing, and touch, students with autism can also struggle with their sense of movement and balance.
When our students become agitated, overstimulated, and/or are in need of a break we believe giving them the space and time to move their bodies can help to release that energy.
With a lack of space in classrooms, small handheld tools like the fidget poppers, slime, and sensory balls can provide our students with the necessary physical and mental workout to help stay focused with the use of only their hands.
Because many of our students are easily overstimulated, struggle with regulating emotions, and need extra support in managing disruptive behavior, all requested materials will go to benefit every child at our school site(about 150)! Each student will receive a "Smiley face" gift bag this holiday season with a fidget popper bracelet along with either slime or stress ball.
Our school employs a PBIS program called “PRIDE” (Practice safety, Respect, In location, Do the responsible thing, and Engage in learning). Students are earning points throughout the day as they follow PRIDE. Any extra resources requested will go to support our PBIS program. As students earn their points, they will reach different tiers of awards and prizes such as one of the requested sensory supports. Please help us help our students with the gift that will keep on giving them a healthy mind and body in the classroom this holiday season.
