Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in the South Bronx at a District 75 school. District 75 provides highly specialized instructional support for students with significant challenges, such as autism spectrum disorders, significant cognitive delays, emotional disturbances, sensory impairments, and multiple disabilities. Our school population consists of students from grades K -12 across seven school sites.

Our students are superheroes!

Whether it's learning how to read or write or solving a mathematical equation; our students are working hard to strengthen those abilities and use them to break down any obstacle.

My Project

Can you imagine not being able to afford fresh clothing? I can, and so can many of our students in the South Bronx.

We know that if students' basic needs are not met, it interferes with their learning.

There are biological requirements for human survival, such as food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, and sleep. If these needs are not satisfied, the human body cannot function optimally. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs considered physiological needs the MOST important as all the other needs become secondary until these needs are met. One of the most devastating effects of COVID-19 has been the sheer number of families unemployed and who are struggling to provide for their basic needs.

Science says that the clothes we wear affect our behavior, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, and even the way we interact with others. This is called “Enclothed Cognition“. Just like for us adults, clothing can be a powerful tool to motivate, inspire, and connect our students on a daily basis. However for our students in temporary housing, just being able to afford fresh underwear, and /or a t-shirt can be a struggle. This can can leave our students feeling uncomfortable, distracted and/or worse isolated.

I have seen students come to school with holes in their clothing. Even worse, I have seen students come in without underwear or without an extra pair when they are known to have toiling accidents. We as a school community would love to get ahead of these known issues that our students face and build a reserve of resources to support them in their times of need.

Invest in our students and the future of the Bronx. With your support we will be able to provide our students with fresh t-shirts, socks, and underwear to keep them healthy and safe.
