My Students

My students have been working hard to learn all about the various habitats around NYC. Additionally they have been focusing on the Croton watershed to learn how water is delivered to NYC residents from upstate NY. We now would like to bring these ideas to them using a more hands-on approach!

I have 24 students in my 5th grade gifted class.

The school is considered a Title 1 school, so many students in the school are below the poverty line. It would mean a lot to them for them to go on this trip and experience life outside of NYC. This will be an experience that they never will forget!

My Project

The trip is a 3 day, 2 night excursion. The students will first go to a farm and learn how the various areas of the farm operate. They will then go to the Taconic Outdoor Education Center, where they will be partaking in various outdoor lessons, including team building, survival skill and a night hike.

Many students have never been exposed to the wilderness or camping itself; this trip will allow for them to not only experience being away from their parents and learning how to share and serve others (they become the waitstaff and learn about taking only what they will eat on their plate) but they will also be given the opportunity to learn while playing and exploring the outdoors!
