My Project

As a teacher-librarian at Denbigh High school in Newport News, VA, I have the unique opportunity to connect with students from every grade level and play a role in their academic and personal growth. While I am fortunate to witness their many achievements, I also see the struggles many of our students face, often beyond their control. They carry burdens that are invisible to most, expressing their challenges through silence, exhaustion, anger, or sadness. Sometimes, their physical appearance can reveal the difficulty of their circumstances at home.

Although we can't solve most of the issues that our students face outside of school, we can make a difference within the school walls.

One way I’ve chosen to help is by focusing on improving our school’s free clothing and shoe closet. Providing students with free clothing and shoes is more than just meeting a practical need—it helps foster their emotional well-being and sense of belonging. With the help of some student volunteers, I relocated the closet to a library office and began reaching out to our faculty, students and community for donations of gently used items. Then we washed, sorted, and organized the donations. Since our "reopening" in December, we’ve been able to give away several coats, shoes, and many clothing items.

However, we’ve noticed that our most requested and needed item is pants. Sadly, most of the pants we have are too big for our students. To meet this need, I am reaching out to ask for donations of black sweatpants—a versatile and popular style that will suit many students and provide the comfort and confidence they deserve. Your donation of gently used black sweatpants will make a real difference in our students' lives. Thank you!
