Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Can you imagine not having enough resources and knowledge to take care of your body's needs. Especially, during the period of adolescence where our bodies are changing and developing faster than we can keep up. I can, and so can many of our students in the South Bronx.

We know that if students' basic needs are not met, it interferes with their learning.

Science says that our personal hygiene can greatly affect our behavior, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, and even the way we interact with others. More and more of our middle schoolers are coming into their bodies and hormones are on a rise. Body odor and self-image has become a prevailing issue for most of our students with autism affecting all areas of their learning and development throughout the day. Students are now looking beyond themselves and at their peers for more self-assurance and acceptance. However bad body hygiene is leaving our students feeling uncomfortable, distracted and/or worse isolated at school.

So let’s teach them! With the requested resources we can teach our students when and how to apply deodorant. We can teach our students how to clean themselves with a rag and soap or even how to use wipes in a quick moment to freshen up. We can teach our students how to use a tooth brush and tooth paste to brush their teeth.

Please Invest in our students and the future of the South Bronx. With all requested resources we will build an adaptive living skills program centered around our student’s growing and changing bodies to promote healthy living.
