My Project
This project will bring crucial incubating materials to our classroom - including an incubator, a brooder, baby chick feed, food, and water containers, and materials to create an in-class box home with netting and bedding.
Additionally, this project contains two wonderful resources for teaching (this will be my 6th year!) of the chicken life cycle.
One resource allows students to "open" a plastic egg to see what is happening inside of the eggs in our incubator. The other resource is a poster (we'll use it for counting down the days) and see what our "growing chicks" look like inside the incubator.
This is a project near and dear to my heart, as I've seen the way kids light up when they connect all the reading and writing we do about chickens in the 21 days leading up to the hatching time frame. Then, when a chick finally does hatch they are captivated! It's a beautiful thing, and as much work as it can be on a teacher, I know that this is a core memory they won't forget!
If you are wondering about the farm - I'll find a sustainable and cruelty-free farm to hand our young chicks off to for lots of love and free-ranging space!
