My Students

My students have come from many different parts of the world including Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Nepal, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the United States. They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. At our school, 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and 96% of the students are students of color. The majority of my students are learning English as a second or third language. They are students with the capacity to achieve greatness.

My Project

The school I work at is a Performing Arts Magnet and we are so lucky to have a relationship with the Minnesota Opera. My students will be going to a special performance of the Odyssey in February. But, before we go, we need to understand the story and its modern implications.

Graphic novels are so digestible and engaging for 5th graders--the books in this project will help my students break down themes and details of the story of the Odyssey.

Students will read the graphic novels in small groups and then they will compare and contrast the styles and stories of the books they read.
