My Students

My students live in the suburbs of San Francisco and attend school eagerly and joyfully. Although they experience privilege in a number of arenas, they want to learn how to better interact with the world at large. They are hungry to read more BIPOC literature and I want to be able to step into those gaps and direct them to quality fiction and nonfiction.

My Project

These books will open windows into the experiences of YA BIPOC. Study after study reveals that reading allows us to enter into experiences and opens doors for empathy and compassion. For ourselves, to see our own BIPOC lives in print, and for others, to step into our shoes and better understand from a historical perspective what BIPOC folx have been denied.

It is essential that young Americans enter into these challenging conversations.

Reading allows us to enter safely, with respect. Becoming educated means understanding the many voices of our country.
