My Students

My Students are a part of the NYSAA (New York State Alternate Assessment) program known as ACES.

These amazing students are a low function population amongst the larger special education population, within a Title I school.

Many of my students, though in High School, cannot read beyond a first grade level. As a Social Studies and Reading teacher, it is my job to bring them a traditional high school curriculum in a way that they can understand. It is a challenge to keep them interested in a topic for long periods of time, so many of our topics are extended over many weeks. They are a part of a work study program as well. They gain both life skills and academics in one place. This helps them to gain a better sense of life after they leave our program. They have the opportunity to stay in this program until they are 21, meaning many of my students will be with me for 8 years. This also causes a challenge because granted many of them do not retain info for that long, I still must recreate the curriculum each and ever year.

My Project

My students love to be apart of their learning. In a small classroom bringing in technology can be very difficult. In my class we try to give the students a chance to explore the world and the topics of study through the use of technology such as a computer. In a school of over 3,000 students if it hard to get our hands on the computer cart to use for research.Even if we are lucky enough to get a day to use them, my classroom is not equipped to store or even house a computer cart for a few periods. Many times my students are forced to huddle around the one teaching computer we have near my desk, and take turns.

I know we are in an age when most students would just use their phones for research, however due to the low economics of my student population, many of my students either do not own a cellphone or they have one with no internet access.

The new laptop will also help them when they are editing their new mini historical videos that are now possible through a pervious donation. Computers are the gateway to learning and exploring. I hope that I am able to equip my students with not only a way to learn and explore, but with a love for research and the unknown.
