Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

grit (n): courage and resolve; strength of character.

My students show grit each day when they walk into my classroom.

I greet them with a fist bump at the door and they walk in ready to learn and ready to work hard. Witnessing the grit my students show is humbling and inspirational as a teacher. Some will be the first to graduate high school. Many will be the first in their family to go to college. The climb there isn't easy, but I know all my students will get there.

Our school serves students in grades 5-8 and provides rigorous academics, wonderful teachers, and a safe, structured, and loving environment. Our goal is to prepare students to make it to and through college and our pursuit is relentless. Our students continually rise to the challenge. They are future leaders. They will change the world. I can only hope to have the honor of witnessing it.

My Project

My students love to read. During March my school had a reading competition to see which homeroom could read the most words. It was a competition meant to get students invested and interested in reading.

During March, my students read over 34 million words and won the reading competition.

My classroom was abuzz with a new interest in reading. Students encouraged each other to read. They exchanged books. My most reluctant readers took an interest in reading. As a teacher it was a dream to see. It was nothing short of inspiring.

My students have read most of the books in my library and need more books to read to continue their investment in and love of reading! Your donation can not only help get new books in the hands of my students, but can also help develop their love of reading.
