I'm the new theatre instructor. I’m having so much fun and I have learned so much from these young ladies. They never complain. I guess because it’s hard to complain about what's missing if you don't know what's missing. We’ve had two successful school productions, although sorely lacking in seating, props and costumes. The girls were real troopers and they pressed to create a memorable Arts Night and holiday production. They definitely made the best of the situation.
The girls are creative, outgoing, thoughtful young ladies that never shy away from a challenge.
They look at the end goal and work to achieve it. I've seen it happen over and over again in their classrooms, clubs and after school programs. They work hard and they make me proud.
My Project
I'm the new theatre instructor at Ivy Preparatory Academy for Girls in Atlanta Georgia, a Title I school. I’m having so much fun and I have learned so much from these young ladies. They never complain. I guess because it’s hard to complain about what's missing if you don't know what's missing. We’ve had two successful school productions, although sorely lacking in seating, props and costumes. The girls were real troopers and they pressed to create a memorable Arts Night and holiday production. They definitely made the best of the situation. Our productions are held in the cafeteria because we don't have a theatre space, the logistics are horrible. Using folding chairs in a large cavernous room, with no sound system that supports theatre, and no stage, lights or costumes except those I was able to pull together, is the reason I'm coming to you.
Being a Title I school our funds are earmarked for the core subjects and I understand this, but I know that theatre can play a role in raising self-esteem and giving students a voice.
It did it for me. Our goal at Ivy is to provide for and support the whole girl and I believe theatre can play a role in this. The girls want to do a production of "The Wiz". As you can see we are here asking for help with costumes and props. I take working with these young ladies at this early stage (K-8) of their pursuit of the arts serious. Please help me show them what it is like when everything comes together for a production… and when someone believes in them. Thank you for time and consideration.
