My Students

Everything is changing, always moving, but in my remote classroom there is stability. My curious and energetic second graders from diverse backgrounds know that there would be a sense of normalcy even while in distant learning. In our class we are a family, not your average family, but they know that I truly care. In our virtual classroom, scholars are always greeted with a warm smile and wellness check. Even before Covid-19, our scholars lack basic supplies and materials needed for academic success. Learning from home have many challenges and for my scholars some of those challenges are magnified. Many of my scholars read below grade level and lack foundational reading skills. I aspire to strengthen their love for reading while instructing them in phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Reading aloud to my scholars provides a model of fluency and creates an interest for learning that boosts their skills in both language and literacy. Many of them do not have access to eye-catching and engaging books at home. My scholars desperately need this opportunity to expand on their knowledge.

“Reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them.”

My Project

Remote learning for second graders is tough, but our daily read-alouds are rewarding. I love reading books to my scholars and seeing their faces light up with joy as they discover new characters and make predictions on endings. I have observed the excitement on their faces during our virtual read-alouds and would love to provide them with more book choices. However, with remote learning, I do not have access to library books and have limited amount of books at home that are on my scholars reading level.

My desire is to create a “classroom library” at my home that I will transfer to the school when we return to in-person instruction.

In our virtual “classroom library” I will choose exciting and interesting books to read to my scholars from a variety of genres as well as chapter books. Reading aloud to my scholars help build our virtual classroom bond and develop a thirst for books. All the books were chosen with my scholars in mind. They will have a chance to hear reading of their choice and on their level. This donation of books will empower my scholars to listen to books that will both interest and inspire them to desire to read more. These age-appropriate reading books can be used for our class read-alouds, literacy centers, and research projects.
