Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 36 kindergarten children with a team teacher in a large urban Hispanic, high poverty community. Our class is a blended regular and special education program. I serve children with a range of disabilities, including deafness, Down's syndrome, developmental and learning disabilities and physical disabilities.

I have a student in my class who functions completely deaf yet passes her hearing test. It is likely that the child has a condition called auditory neuropathy. She has yet to receive a conclusive medical diagnosis which would enable her to receive appropriate educational services. Her family has no phone or car so arranging for medical appointments is challenging. I am working hard to see that this family has the necessary medical follow up. Since the child has never received services for the deaf, she and her family were never instructed in communication options for deaf children, such as sign language. The child is being taught to communicate with signs for the first time! You can't imagine how excited this very bright child is to be able to label nouns, verbs and adjectives for the first time!

Can you imagine how devastating it is for this child and her family to have no formal communication training for six years? I have provided the family with a sign dictionary to get started, but we need a large variety of books that the family can share together. The family's home language is Spanish so I especially need books in sign language with Spanish translation.

You can make it possible for this student to participate in our class lending library by providing very special books for her to borrow weekly and share with her family. You will also be supporting the entire class because the books will be a special part of our class library for all the children to enjoy and to increase their ability to communicate with their classmates. Additionally, we have another special child with Down's syndrome who is non-verbal and communicates expressively in sign language and his home language is also Spanish. This child will also have the opportunity to borrow from the special book collection weekly to share with his family. I need your help to provide these special children with access to these unique books and open up their silent world.
