Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Everybody Clap Your Hands!" Students begin class with a social dance to build community before choreographing their own work. The students learn dances from around the world, including West African, Salsa, the Waltz and Bollywood. Through dancing, students learn about themselves and the world.

My students are international, English language learners from over 30 different countries.

Our school is in a large city with 100% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Dance company students are adapting to life in a major U.S. city, learning everything from public transportation to how to apply to college, while also learning English. Dance provides them with a physical outlet and form of artistic expression, while also encouraging them to be agents of change!

My Project

Students have been working tirelessly to choreograph original dances from a variety of cultural backgrounds. From Salsa, Bollywood to a Panamanian hip hop dance, students are showing their creativity and dance acumen. As our school does not have an auditorium, this trip will allow students to host an annual dance performance in a professional theatre!

This theatre is located within walking distance from our school and has enough seats that students' families and peers will be able to cheer them on and celebrate their successes in Dance!

This experience will have a lasting effect on students as they gain self-confidence through showcasing their creativity and hard work.
