Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am so fortunate to work in a school that supports the academic, social, emotional and vocational adaptation of skills for individuals who are on the autism spectrum. Our students each bring to the classroom a wide array of incredible skills and needs that span the entire spectrum. They amaze me every single day with their ability to adapt to an ever changing world but also remain their true selves for the whole world to see without any apologizing. They show love and laughter in ways every day that we celebrate and seek to spread out into the community. They yearn for inclusion and acceptance into the broader world and I love the opportunity I have to help them successfully bring the world to them.

My Project

Working with individuals who have autism, you learn the many different mediums that students access information through. The importance of providing alternate and differentiated avenues for students to read, write and calculate using tools online will help open so many doors. Oftentimes, my students struggle with writing and keeping pace, when typing is so much faster. Time is often of the essence when trying to teach new concepts. The ability for students to feel that they aren't falling behind with writing but can keep pace makes acquiring more skills even greater.

The spark that I see in the student's eyes when they independently navigate the web to find an answer is often unmatched by little else.

Preparing students for the future means helping them become true 21st-century learners. The laptops that I have selected will be a real game-changer in my ability to deliver instruction both in one-on-one and whole group instruction. The increased motivation, attention and focus that I hope to see from my students by them each getting a laptop to use will provide a more equitable playing field. I look forward to seeing students learn from one another and share the projects these laptops will help them create.
