This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Opening a door to the rest of the world. Books provide that door to anywhere our dreams and imagination can take us. Books also let us experience different cultures in a safe and inviting manner. Books break down walls of ignorance and hate. Books are a wonderful door.
My scholars are an amazing group of fifth graders.
I teach at a public charter school on the West side of Chicago, where the student population is 100% African-American, and all qualify for free and reduced meals. My scholars' only exposure to Asian-Americans or Asians is when interacting with store owners behind Plexiglass walls at a take out restaurant, or viewing stereotypes portrayed in the media.
My Project
My scholars will have the opportunity to be exposed to, learn about, and make connections to Asian-Americans through our daily independent reading time. They will also get to share out their book experiences and learning through our weekly student-led book talks.
This project will allow my students to understand and experience Asians and Asian-Americans through authentic texts in which they will be able to make real life connections.
Exposure and information have the power to tear down walls of ignorance and hate. It is through this project that I hope to provide my scholars with the information and understanding to set aside misunderstandings and preconceived notions, while simultaneously experiencing the Asian and Asian-American culture.
