This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
This year I will be teaching college and career-ready literacy skills to an amazing group of ninth-graders in the District of Columbia. My students are diverse, resilient, and caring. I am privileged to be their teacher.
All of my students are focused on obtaining the excellent education that they deserve.
In our class, we encourage each reader to consistently read independently and passionately. We are a community that works hard, does not give up on each other, and that reminds each other why this work is important each and every day.
My students will use these books to continue to develop their love of reading. We will be tracking our progress throughout the year and students are eager for more reading options.
With these texts, students will feel empowered to choose complex texts that interest them and will deepen their commitment to learning and growth. My students understand the importance of reading every day and will be even more excited about this sacred time because of these new texts they will have to grapple with.
More than half of students from low‑income households
