Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Personal experience is one of the best teacher." I believe in this quote because not everything in life can be learned in the four walls of the classroom; but, through active exploration and participation to any opportunity that one encounters in life. This is what I want my students to experience.

My students are the new arrivals in this country with little or no English at all.

Being new immigrants to the U.S., most of them don't really know much about the country more so, the city they now live in, New York City. The Flushing International High School serves the new immigrants of the city; our students come from all parts of the world. Though we approximately have 425 students for the 9th-12th grades, student population is very diverse with a little over 20 different native language of the students. Yet, this has never been a barrier for most of the students to thrive. One of the after school programs offered to these students is the Explorers Club where we bring our students to trips in the museums, parks, events, etc. in order to have that first-hand learning experience. These trips happens on Saturdays. Since these club started in 2006, I have witnessed how these Explorers Club experiences improved not only their communication skills but also their socio-emotional readiness

My Project

Students tend to stay in their respective borough and don't have the chance to explore the place they call their "new" home because of financial reason or no one can bring them around. Hence, my school run this Explorers Club (since 2006) for these new immigrants to give them the chance to learn more about their "new home". One of the club's project is to bring them to the One World Observatory in Manhattan for this will be a great learning experience for them. Through this trip, they will see why people say that New York is the capital of the world. These students qualified for a 100% free lunch because their families belong to below poverty line. Since learning English is one of the challenges that these new immigrant-students are confronted with, visual and verbal education about NYC will be a great learning experience for these students. I hope that after this experience, they will share their experiences through different forms of media: creating a poem, drawing, song, etc.

This will have a great impact among these new immigrant-students because this will make them understand the "new" home that they live in now.

Also, this will aim to making the students value this place that they now call HOME and hopeful that they will become productive constituents of the city.
