My Students

Every class my sophomores start our day by reading. Reading has been a way for my classes to build community this year. Gathering around stories has been a way for us to connect as both humans and learners.

My sophomore students are curious, self-aware, and hungry for books that explore the world around them.

They frequently share with our class the "good part" that they are reading. Many times they recommend a book for me or their classmates to read.

My Project

Students need to read stories to grow as people and as readers. Reading, when it is personal and connected to current events, can spark a student's interest . The books in my classroom library should mirror the lives and diversity of the students in my classroom. Recently, I asked my students what books they would like to see in our classroom library. They overwhelmingly told me they wanted more modern graphic novels, nonfiction, and poetry.

Expanding our classroom library to include more diverse and contemporary books will help my students foster empathy, feel validated, and explore different backgrounds and cultures.

Updating our library will give students more choice during independent reading.

My students have already shown that they enjoy independent reading this year. An updated classroom library will encourage my students to visit our bookshelves frequently.
