My Students
Hands on learning and self-sufficiency are vital to a child's development of a positive self-concept. Students get both when they sew; creating products that fund their own field experiences, providing for a creative outlet in the arts and a real-world pathway to concepts in math and geometry.
Our school is a public charter Montessori, growing to grades 1-8.
Students in the Adolescent Program are a diverse mix from low to middle socioeconomic backgrounds. Students have a deep respect for one another, in spite of their differences, and take to heart the school virtues: Gratitude, Respect, Care of the Environment, Cooperation and Peace. The school aims to provide a rigorous academic curriculum, while at the same time, an environment that speaks to the unique needs of children at all developmental stages. The Adolescent Program is in its pioneer year and in much need of the materials and equipment to support the diverse interests and curiosities of emerging teenagers.
My Project
As part of our Adolescent Curriculum, students develop and run, from top to bottom, micro-businesses that support their field experiences and travel. This year they will be studying and preparing for the Montessori Model UN. They have chosen to create a micro-business that fulfills the needs of the student community, while promoting the green ideals of the school. Students will create and sew reusable napkins, lunch boxes and other items for sale at their weekly market. In addition, they will develop a quilt around the theme of United Nations posters from history. This quilt will also be auctioned off to raise funds for their field experience. In addition to raising funds, the opportunity to sew and create works of beauty and function offers a creative outlet and application of their learning to real world situations.
The story quilt students created last year can be seen in our class picture.
All told, the students and teachers invested 700 hours and it was just beautiful to watch students take an idea and turn it into something that far exceeded their expectations. Each child developed a voice through their creativity and it was gratifying to see them learn and grow beyond their perceived limitations and come together as a community. Project supports curriculum in: math, arts, literacy, social studies, etc.
