My Students

My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of my students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of my students face additional struggles such as poverty or homelessness.

My students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of my students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

My students are learning job, community, self-advocacy, and leisure skills that will help them live as independently as possible, stepping into meaningful lives as adults in their communities.

My Project

My students need a sound system for use in the classroom as well as during student-led and student-created performances. This sound system will amplify student voices, instruments, and student-created music.

Each year, my students create a music showcase inspired by their individual interests, strengths, and talents, and centered around a theme of their choosing.

This sound system will allow students to bring a level of professionalism to their performances.

In daily classroom use, this sound system, amplifier, and microphone setup will allow my students to practice using microphones, to amplify and hear their voices, and to connect with one another through performance art experiences. The mic stands and mic cords of different lengths will allow each student to use the microphones as independently as possible. The speaker stands will be used in large performance spaces so all student voices can be heard. These high-quality materials will give all of my special education students the ability to practice professional-level performing skills. All materials purchased through this project will support me as I work to build student confidence and quality of life through music experiences.
