Mrs. Nugent from San Diego, CA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. Nugent is requestingMy students need flexible seating spread all over the classroom. I have already seen huge success with the few things I have been able to purchase and now I need your help to expand our options to include stools, bean bag chairs and backpatter seats!

I work in a Title 1 school where my kids don't have access to many things we take for granted, both in and out of the classroom. After years of working with these kids, I have finally been inspired (by them) to take my classroom to the next level!
I have spent countless hours researching the right books for our room library, creating high-interest lesson plans, and even making a fool of myself to keep them engaged.
I'm in the process of transitioning my room into one that is fueled by alternative seating options because if I have learned anything working in a diverse neighborhood like this one, Irma that one size does NOT fit all!
After spending a few years teaching 8th grade English, I have been able to hook all types of students: the reluctant readers, the "I can't write" kid, those who think school has to be boring, and many other types of teens! The focus I have given myself for this year is to bring my outliers into the fold, to really make them feel like there is a place for them in my room, school, and the world in general. This all begins with the seating and comfort in their learning environment. These might be kids suffering from learning disabilities, physical ailments that keep them in a state of discomfort, or just your everyday 14-year-old that doesn't fit in and needs an inviting space to socialize with their peers.
I launched this school year with a few area rugs, comfy pillows, and message boards in different corners of my classroom.
I kept my expectations low with this experiment, but after only a week of school there is one thing I now know for sure: I NEED TO EXPAND THIS IDEA AND FAST! Kids have a new sense of autonomy in the room, they are making friends with the new kids, and the productivity in our room has gone way up....and it's the first week of school!
My students don't get to choose many things in their lives as many of them are living in a small home with multiple families and sharing every possession they have. Giving them a choice, something as small as where they sit in class every day, is something that I want to and feel I must work hard to provide for them.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read about my project and your willingness to embark on this journey with me.
