My Students

I teach at an urban public high school. To say we have had an interesting end to our school year would be an understatement. The teachers at our high school worked very hard to transfer all our classes online and most importantly make them accessible and engaging for all students. We worked tirelessly as a community to make sure all students had access to technology, the internet, food if they needed it and for the Seniors, we made sure they were celebrated for all their hard work. Our students were dealing with just as much as the teachers were. Many of the students turned into essential workers overnight and at the same time were having to worry about their health and the health of their families. Things changed for them overnight.

My Project

While our students stepped up to the challenge of finishing their school year online they told us they really missed their school community. The English department came up with the idea to bring our school community back together by reading one book over the summer. Every student from 9th through 12th grade will be reading Becoming by Michelle Obama. Every subject is offering a project that is connected to the book. Math, science, social studies, and language arts have projects that connect to the many themes in this extraordinary book. Our students are living in historical times and we want to inspire them to be leaders and be change-makers. These books will go to the students who can't afford to buy the book on their own. In Michelle Obama's words, “Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?” We can't wait to see what our students become.
