My Project

In April, I will be implementing a poetry unit in which third graders explore a variety of poems and are encouraged to write their own. In order to inspire great writing of their own, students must first immerse themselves in great poetry. The books in this project are anywhere on the spectrum of serious to funny, short to long, rhyming to freeverse -- a true taste of poetry in a variety of forms.

Using the book Poetry Prompts, students will learn from a former poet laureate that there is no right or wrong to writing poetry.

He encourages students to read some of his poems then branch out and try their own. With his playful tone and silly subject matter, Mr. Coelho will inspire students to think of themselves as poets while writing short or long poems of their own.

The project will culminate with the third graders creating their own poems to put in their pockets for "Poem in Your Pocket Week." Either choosing a favorite poem that they read throughout April or writing one of their own, students will fill our hallways with poems so other students in our school can experience the power of poetry!
