This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day, they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school, and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

I teach at a Title I school where more than half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.

My Project

Kids hate to write. They will fight and fight to avoid sitting down and putting their thoughts on paper. Sadly, this is extremely detrimental to their education as so much of what we do is based around strong writing skills. The ability to think is vital, but to be able to represent your thoughts in a credible manner is just as crucial, and an unwillingness to get writing practice hurts children so much.

What if there was a way to get children to want to write?

What if we could find a way to get them to argue (let's hope they don't argue) over who gets the opportunity to write? Having a Surface Pro with a stylus would get us to that point.

The ability for children to write their thoughts down using a stylus on a funky piece of technology is just the hook we need to get them writing, and that is just one of the MANY functions of a high end tablet like a Surface Pro.

I have a fully flipped classroom so all of my content can be found online. Living in a high-poverty community, advanced technology can be hard to come by. To be able to add something like a Surface Pro to my slowly growing assortment of technology would give a huge boost to what we can do in my classroom.
