This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are musically gifted starting at an early age. They come in the door eager to sing, dance, move and play instruments each day. The younger students love to get their hands on as many classroom instruments as possible including xylophones, drums, rhythms sticks, tambourines, triangles....you name it! Older students learn to perform in ensembles and continue to develop their music reading aptitude by learning to play the recorder.
While our students come from many different cultural backgrounds, music is a universal language that connects us.
I want to expose my students to as many different musical instruments as possible that will provide a lifetime of artistic expression.
My Project
Our school continues to grow and class time is limited. We would like to have a ukulele for each student so instrument time is maximized and every student remains engaged in the music making process. My students are constantly looking for more opportunities to create music. They eagerly come to the music room before school and during their recess time for extra practice.
Learning the ukulele provides a skill that the students can take with them and enjoy for the rest of their lives.
Our students do live in a high poverty area and face many daily challenges. However, students have found a positive outlet for expressing themselves and gaining self confidence through music performance. I will be using the ukuleles during class time as well as beginning a ukulele ensemble that will have the opportunity to perform for our school and our community.
