Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One Fish, Two Fish, Live Fish, New Fish! Imagine the energy and excitement of 20 kindergarten students studying living and non-living things. In my classroom in Central Falls, RI we learn the characteristics of living things and compare them to other items in our classroom such as blocks, books, and paint. My students are constantly honing their scientific observation skills and are budding scientists eagerly awaiting our next discovery. While we have plants to study, we don’t have any animals to inform our observations of living things. Wouldn’t it be hard to study animal behavior if you only had pictures? Here’s where you can help. We need a small aquarium with several varieties of fish to inform our scientific study. I would like my students to be able to observe living, breathing, moving fish as they glide around their habitat in our classroom. This will fit our classroom space and our science standards perfectly! An aquarium will not only be an important part of our science study but will provide students opportunities to care for our “pets” all year as part of our classroom community. Many of my students do not have the space for pets at home. Thank you for bringing us new friends with fins! We look forward to observing and recording their behavior in science.
