One Day at the Theatre; A Lifelong Love of Literature

My students need a trip to the theatre because budget cuts have left our schools devoid of many of the fine arts and my students have never been exposed to live theatre.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I dim the lights and begin to read aloud. My students sit up and their eyes never move away from me. When I'm done, they beg for more! Read alouds are the best time in my class. I think it's because I read with expression, voices and gestures, much as if I was performing for them.

My students love being read to.

They enjoy imagining stories and hearing the voices of the characters come alive. About 6 years ago, when my current students were only about 1 year old, I coordinated the arts program at my school. I used the $20,000 budget to bring artists of all kinds to the school. The students then worked with visual artists, musicians and actors right in their own auditorium, becoming part of the presentations themselves. But around that time, all of the budget was gone. My current students have never been exposed to some of these artistic presentations. Some had music in first grade, but that is all. They are students from low-income families whose budgets are stretched too thin and don't always have time, money or knowledge of where to access such arts opportunities.

My Project

My students might enjoy it when I read aloud to them, but I am not a professional. As a classroom teacher, I have other subjects to teach and cannot devote myself to putting on a full theatrical performance. But I long to take my students to see real theater. Going to see a children's presentation of The Tortoise and the Hare, a story they have read in class, will bring the story to life in a way that I can't. They will experience the story with all their senses. They will be able to relate personally to the characters and grasp the message of perseverance more profoundly. They will understand that stories can move you and take you away from reality, even for just a moment.

Undoubtedly, seeing a theatrical performance will awaken in them the desire to hear more stories and even to read more of them themselves.

This one experience will be one we can go back to all year to discuss story elements, such as setting, characters, plot and the central theme of any literature piece. It will cement the learning that will take place the entire year.
