Computers are an essential tool for learning. Currently, my fifth grade classroom has no computers for student use. My students are scheduled in the computer lab for 45 minutes once a week. They need more exposure to up-to-date technology as a tool for learning.
Our unique school services a large population of visually impaired students as well as other students selected through a lottery system.
Our school is 100% public, and we are proud of our fantastic reputation. Our student body is 85% African American, with the remaining 15% being a combination of Asian, Latino, and Caucasian students. These students are excited about education, and many are driven by family members from all over the city just so they can be a part of our great tradition. Approximately 60% of our students live at or below the poverty level. We are a Title I school. My fifth grade students are exceptionally bright, and they need to be challenged and stimulated.
As stated above, our classroom has zero computers for student use. With the addition of a touch screen computer in our classroom, my students will be able to access reading and math intervention programs on a daily, not weekly, basis. These programs track student progress and performance and will help me further identify specific areas requiring remediation and support. This computer will also be used in conjunction with our classroom Promethean Board, speeding up our current processing speed allowing for a smoother and faster lesson flow. Additionally, this computer, with the subscription to Office, will also be used for improving student word processing skills with increased exposure to proper typing format. This computer would be a central component in our classroom.
In today's technologically advanced society there is no reason that children should not have exposure to computers on a daily basis.
Many of my students come from homes that do not have a computer at all. If we want our children to succeed in a world where computing skills are vital to work place success, then we must equip them with the necessary tools and skills to be a productive addition to the workforce. Thank you so much for supporting public education and our classroom!
