This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are a remarkable group of curious, thoughtful, and determined learners who love reading! They thrive when given opportunities to engage deeply with stories that challenge their thinking, spark meaningful discussions, and expand their understanding of the world. To support their love for literature, I am seeking a class set of The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate.

This novel will be more than just a book in their hands—it will be an opportunity to strengthen their literacy skills, build empathy, and develop critical thinking.

Bob’s journey of resilience, courage, and self-discovery will encourage students to analyze complex themes, make connections to their own lives, and engage in discussions that go beyond the pages of the book.

Before reading The One and Only Bob, students will first explore The One and Only Ivan, allowing them to form a deeper connection to the characters and themes. Experiencing Ivan’s journey first will enhance their understanding, making Bob’s story even more significant. Having their own copy will also give students the freedom to annotate, highlight, and fully engage with the text, helping them strengthen their comprehension and retention.

Beyond improving literacy skills, this book has the power to inspire. Stories like this leave a lasting impact, showing students the power of literature to challenge perspectives, build resilience, and spark a lifelong love for reading. My students are eager to learn, but access to high-quality books can sometimes be a challenge. With your support, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to experience this story in a way that fosters both academic growth and personal reflection.
