My Students

How can I expect my students to analyze text, use context clues when they run into a word they don't know, and research when they do not have the books in their hands to learn from, discover with, and explore? They need the opportunity to read, identify, and connect with the books independently.

Creative, funny, dramatic, and mysterious, those are words to describe my students.

They are also words to describe the books they love to read! My students breathe life into books with me as we explore novels together. I am building life-long readers, lovers of literature, and creative thinkers. Some may even become authors themselves one day!

My Project

I have requested class sets of 3 inspiring novels: The Hundred Dresses, Charlotte's Web, and Little House in the Big Woods. Our entire grade-level works together with our novel studies to explore and enrich our students experiences through the use of comprehension strategies, character analysis, and vocabulary development. Yes, I can read a story to them, however, having class sets of these novels puts the books right in their hands and the lesson at their fingertips. In addition to these novels, I have requested several copies of books for our research of John Muir and our author study of Robert McCloskey books. With these books my students can learn to make text-to-text connections, compare and contrast, and research using non-fiction text.
